Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin - Family Support Centre

Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin has various forms of support available for students and staff with children.

In cooperation with the studierendenWERK Berlin, Humboldt-Universität’s daycare center (Kita) “Die Lupe” was founded in July 2015. Located at Hedwig Dohm Haus in Ziegelstraße 5-9 in Berlin-Mitte, it offers places for about 90 children of the age between 8 weeks and 5-6 years. 39 places are provided for children under 3 years. For further information and registration please visit the studierendenWERK’s website.

Reserved Daycare Place Adlershof

Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin offers a reserved place in the FRÖBEL day nursery on Campus Adlershof via the Family Support Centre. This is intended for short-term care of 3-12 months. It aims to support childcare for guest lecturers and foreign scholarship holders. Application procedure: Application to the Family Support Centre via the head of the facility/project (faculty, research project) Written declaration of assumption of booking costs (€96 per month) for the period of occupancy by the inviting institution or the guest lecturer or scholarship holder Only those who hold a valid day nursery voucher may make use of a reserved day nursery place. If you have any questions on the application procedure, we would be happy to advise you.

Daycare "die humbolde"

The student daycare centre "die humbolde" is another childcare option available to students at HU Campus Mitte. The daycare centre is a further care option in addition to the municipal day nurseries. Two parents (who are also students) look after up to 15 children from age one to preschool age. The daycare centre was established in 1995 at the initiative of student parents to enable attendance at teaching sessions, language courses etc. outside of standard day nursery opening hours. The daycare centre is run by the HU General Student Committee, represented by the Student Parents office.

Flexible Daycare KidsMobil
  • Is your child ill?
  • Do events, continuing education or work obligations mean that you need childcare or a pick-up service outside of the day nursery’s or after-school care center’s opening hours?

Working in cooperation with KidsMobil, HU offers a mobile, flexible service to bridge gaps in childcare. This is designed for all organisational units within the university with funding for family-friendly measures (graduate schools, collaborative research centres, departments and faculties). The Family Support Centre would be happy to advise you of the type and scope of care available. Upon consultation, you might also be eligible to take advantage of care options beyond the standard service offered.

Conference Daycare

Childcare at conventions, workshops and conferences makes a positive contribution to maintaining a work-studies-family balance. The Humboldt-Universität Family Support Centre supports and advises departments and facilities in organising suitable childcare services. Conference childcare is financed by the organiser of the relevant event. The Family Support Centre offers assistance in the following areas:

  • Cost calculation
  • Arranging a care agency
  • Room planning

Due to the lack of Kita places in Berlin, finding a Kita spot has become one of the biggest challenges for parents in Berlin. The situation affects the Family Support Service equally. For this reason, unfortunately, we can’t arrange any Kita spots.

Kita spots in the HU-Kita “Die Lupe” are assigned directly by the studierenWERK Berlin, Kita spots in “die Humbolde” are assigned by the RefRat. Please have a look on the (incomplete) list of free Kita spots in Kita-Verzeichnis. Also there is the DaKS service (Dachverband Berliner Kinder- und Schülerläden e.V.), which publishes free Kita spots on the website.
